Ways to Support Your Child with Computing
The best way to support your child with computing is to enjoy using technology together, which will allow you to model how to use it safely and responsibly.
Here are some great ideas to help:
- The student becomes the teacher
Let your child become your teacher. Allow them to teach you how to use their favourite app or do something they have learnt at school.
- Research together
You can either choose a topic they are learning about at school or one they are interested in to research with your child. Together decide how reliable you think each website is — does the information on it appear anywhere else? Who created the website? Discuss the rankings — why does the search engine rank some at the top and some further down?
- Help support their homework using technology
Maths skills to practise? Why not help them create a how-to video demonstrating the skill.
Create a short film based on a story they have written? Or perhaps an animation?
Find some YouTubeKids videos or play games together that support what they’re learning about in school.
- Communicate with family
Keep in touch with family members by composing emails together or using services like Skype to make video calls. Discuss how useful these tools can be when used responsibly. You could also use Google maps to find out more about where your family member lives or is visiting.
- Regular Chats
Spend time each week talking about technology with your child. What technology have they used this week? What is their favourite app? It is also important to ensure that your child feels they can come and talk to you, should any issues arise for them.
